SummarizingLink: http://www3.dist214.k12.il.us/admin_depts/staffsupport/SchoolImprovement/Summarizing/summary.htm In Classroom Instruction that Works Robert Marzano, Debra Pickering, and Jane Pollock present nine research based strategies that increase student achievement. Second on their list for having the greatest effect on student achievement is the skill of summarizing. Students, however, must be explictly taught to condense and synthesize information to demonstrate their understanding. To help students with generalizations there are summary frames which help students understand the basic structure of a text. Accessing these frames will provide a description of the frame, an explanation of how to use it, a list of questions to help the reader understand how to form this type of summary, and in most cases a sample of how this frame might be used. Narrative frame Topic-Restriction frame Definition frame Problem-Solution frame Reciprocal teaching frame Rubric (PDF)
